Hi Ashley,
You cant run an RF TV signal over CAT5 but you can run Composite Video and
Audio over CAT5. Mark McCall has seen my working prototypes and I have had
5
sets in use at work distributing a cable TV signal around the structured
wiring for 13 months now. I have also designed VGA and CCTV versions. For
over a year I have been promising to make the units available but due to
lack of time this has not yet happened. It WILL happen in the next month as
I have to install 10 CCTV cameras at work by the end of August so I am now
presured to get the units finished.
Dont even try to send speakers over CAT5 unless you are talking about
really
low level background stuff. CAT5 cable is only designed for low current
applications of less than 1 amp. Speaker currents can easily peak at 10
times this value. There will also be considerable loss of signal through
the
cable in the form of heat.
For running speakers at any decent power level I would recommend the use of
2.5mm cable. Twin & Earth mains cable is probably cheapest but not very
flexible or pretty. Figure of 8 Twin Flex (79/0.2) is my preferred choice
as
this is robust but flexible and not over expensive. I personally do not buy
Monster Cable or other similarly branded cable as in my opinion it is
overpriced hype. All that you need for speakers is a good quality heavy
guage cable to maximise the current transfer between amplifier and speaker.
Hope that helps
