It's hardly rocket science, and it's not even hard work, but it _IS_
extremely tedious, - there's no getting away from the fact that you do have
to sit there end endlessly load / unload CD's. I know an earlier thread
was
asking about using a multichanger drive to batch up CD's to be ripped, but
i
don't recall there ever being a satisfactory way of achieving this.
Personally, I have ripped & encoded about 200 CD's (I used
audiocatalyst),
in a single-disk CD drive in my main server PC. What I can definately say
for sure, is that using SCSI hardware is massively faster than EIDE
hardware...
Example: P-PRO 200Mhz & Adaptec AHA2940UW (PCI, Wide SCSI) with
Wide-SCSI
disks & Yamaha CRW4416 SCSI CDRW drive (16X max) = typically 12 to 14X
rip
speed (as reported by Audiocatalyst), whereas P-II 350Mhz with EIDE disk
&
EIDE 40X max CDROM drive typically achieves 6 - 8 x rip speed.... (although
of course the P-II 350 encodes a little faster, but the ripping phase takes
longer than encoding anyway...)
Hope this helps...

Paul Gordon
