Re: [KAT5] Outdoor RJ45

Hi Robert,

I've had a normal CAT5E pair of cables running outside
my house for the past 4 years. No probs at all with
the weather (let's hope the squirrels don't take an
interest in it).

But...my cables connect in the loft and in the living
room. Then the holes in walls are "sealed" with a
sealant. I would not recommend leaving an open CAT5
socket outside (even with a blank cable plugged in to
keep the gunk and insects out). Perhaps in the garden
shed (at a push) but I still feel it will become
weathered (like my saws in the garage of my garden
fork in the shed, they still went rusty).

For outside use I utilise wi-fi (802.11b/g etc...)

My laptop connects to my network in my garden at
approx. 20-30mbps (yeah, on the box it says 54mbps,
then new one is 108mbps).

Now this is not as fast as a good CAT5 cable (normally
100mbps, forget the old 10mbps and I don't know anyone
using a gig yet at home). But do remember, most
people only have a 512kbps (half a meg) connections.
Even if you had the new 8mbps connections being tested
in London, you'd still have enough bandwidth for the
internet at full speed). The only issue would be
copying lots of data around your network between the
laptop and other machines, but this is only for LARGE
files.

best regards,
Simon
ps
if you're impatient for CAT5 cables and you don't want
to make them yourself (alot cheaper if you need loads
of various lengths, but you have to buy the crimping
tool [not cheap £25] and I really recommend a tester
[bloody expensive at £35]) then I'd buy from

Just wondered whether anyone had ever used suitable
components/method
for installing an RJ45 outside, ie
frost-proof/waterproof. I fancied
one on the outside wall so I could sit with me laptop
at the patio
table. Kids are too mad to risk having a long cable
run through the
patio door!

Sounds like a stupid idea but a quick Google search
suggests these
components exist. Does anyone have any experience of
using them? Also
where to get quality ones from a UK mail-order source?

Thanks,

Robert
