RE: Price of the switcher?

Hi Steve,

I dont know what scart switcher you are thinking of.
How many inputs does it have?
How many outputs does it have?
Does it do S-Video and IR Routing?

The KAT5 switcher will be modular and the basic switching matrix is 8x8.

I still dont have a definate idea of the finished costs of the KAT5
switcher
as there will be several configurations available.

As Paul has already mentioned, some of the parts are quite expensive. For
£60 I can just about buy the 4 crosspoint chips used in the switcher.

As you said yourself, you are thinking of using KAT5 to distribute the
outputs from the switcher. The KAT5 switcher will contain most of the
electronics that are in a KAT5 RX on each of the inputs and most of the
electronics contained in a KAT5 TX for each of the outputs. Given that a
set
of KAT5 units cost £75 I would say that delivering the switcher for £60
would be totally impossible.

The case pictured in the video costs £45 and then there was the cost of
machining the cutouts in the front panel.

The whole purpose of the KAT5 project is to deliver the performance of
Professional quality video equipment without the professional price. It
will
never be able to compete on price with low cost products designed for the
mass consumer market but then thats not whre KAT5 is targeted. It is
designed for people who want the high end features for a mid-band price.
