Of course I know what it means.

I also know what "intentional engineering to fuck people" is too, and
this is an example.  The claim that this is due to the "battery issue"
is horseshit for line-powered devices.

Let's see how this works -

1. A person with an existing dock who is retrofitting for home
automation can spend a couple THOUSAND dollars to have an outdoor outlet
stuck in a convenient (for ZWave) place in their yard so that their
Gazebo and/or Dock can be controlled from the home automation system you
are proposing they install, because the ZWave crooners decided that even
though they have 110VAC power available in the other thirty devices in
the house, none of them will transmit with enough power to go more than 30'.

2. That same person can buy a $60 X10 switch and install that instead,
and it works instantly.

Usenet is still full of people who will make every possible excuse for
stupid decisions made by manufacturers and "industry groups" instead of
calling them on their bullshit when it is well-beyond deserved.
