Announcement of new products relating to home automation is distinctly and
specifically on-topic for the newsgroup comp.home.automation (that's part of
why it is called a _news_group ;-).
Thanks for adding the Aprilaire 8870 thermostat which is probably the most
widely used thermostat in HA. It is supported by Crestron, AMX/Phast, HomeSeer,
CyberHouse, others -- and now Charmed Quark. The one I lent you arrived back in
ol Kaintuck just as the part of our HVAC system it is supposed to control died

The Aprilaire 8870 uses simple ASCII control over RS-485 developed by Enerzone
for its StatNet products. When Aprilaire bought out Enerzone, they adopted and
extended the StatNet protocol. It includes control of dampers, humidity sensors
and so on and IMO is an excellent communication protocol for development of
homebrew hardware including smart 'thermostats/controllers that incorporate
multiple energy sources and energy cost management explicitly. (See other
thread " New paradigm for home heating automation and control" .)
