If you have the wrong code it will say so on screen when you try to
connect. I'll try to help you with this... Read on...

Set the modem to remain audible the whole time. That way you can
hear when the panel disconncets from the line. Try connecting again
and let us know what happens. With that information I or one of the
others here will be able to help you.

You do not need PC Preset at all. That's for doing batches of panels.
Dealers use it when they have to make changes to a whole series of
panels.
