home security research

I'm building a home and I want to get up to speed on home security options.
I figure it's easier to put it in now than retrofit later. I'd want the
ability to monitor inside & outside via the Internet when I'm away, auto-on
cameras & lights, off-site recording. What else should I be looking at?
