In the 29+ years I've been in this industry there has yet to be one successful
lawsuit against an installing dealer published in any of the trade journals
based on a "bug" in an alarm panel. The most common causes cited in product
liability lawsuits against alarm dealers have consistently been failure to
respond and improper or inadequate installation.

The next most common source of lawsuits (and this is growing) isn't actually a
product liability issue at all. It's misleading advertising / unfair trade.
Most of these lawsuits are brought by attorneys general of various states
against dealers who offer "free" systems which require paid monitoring services.

The fact is, despite repeated claims to the contrary, successful product
liability lawsuits in the alarm industry are relatively rare compared to other
industries such as automotive. Part of the reason successful lawsuits are so
rare is that alarm companies almost invariably have very carefully worded
disclaimers of warranty, limitations of liability and third party
indemnification clauses in their contracts.
