take a look at the Kantech system www.kantech.com

with the ioprox type reader you should be ok

you can even integrate the system with an alarm system to implement that
only some card can disarm the alarm and that the door will not unlock on
there normal schedule if the alarm is armed..

3 kt 300 one entrapss special edition and a computer xp or 2000 on it with
one serial port or if you want to use a usb to rs485 translater to
communicate with the controlers..

every thing is controler controled so even if the software is not online it
will still work perfectly

the software is well done stable and have enough feature to make you wonder
what more stuff you can do with it..

it can even control remote site by tcp-ip or modem
