This is an honest question...do these panels have any sort of over-current
protection? I've replaced lost of bad bridge rectifiers (and discrete diodes
doing the same thing), even shorted devices, and the worst damage I've seen
is a blown fuse.

UL/CSA requires a fuse, IIRC.
