The xPL4Java framework could easily be used to implement something like
xPLHAL. The framework and any apps using it already fully support
configurable devices.
The next version of the xPL4Java stuff (due out, with luck, this weekend),
includes a new tool called DCM -- Device Configuration Manager. This is a
Java app that can discover new devices, enumerate them, list their
configurability status and then actually let you set config values.
It's by no means a start on a xPLHAL program in Java (it really only
handles
a small part of the xPLHAL GUI -- but one I feel is really needed for all
platforms -- device configuration). But I've grown tired of having to take
a laptop from work home for a night just to run xPLHAL to configure a new
device (necessity is the mother of invention and all that :-)
But there is the potential for such a thing as this goes and given the
structure of the xPL4Java server, it would be very easy to add this in with
new modules (the server already provides the "Windows
service"-like
environment for long running apps of this sort).
Gerry
P.S. While I see having a platform independent xplHAL-like engine out
there,
I'm still not sold on such a thing being the repository of device listings
and requiring an app (like a front end) to have to query it (for all the
reasons I laid out in my last email :-)
