Yes I think they should.
Displaying a picture is just the same as playing any other media (you
could think of it as a one frame movie!). When you "stop"
displaying
it, the display just reverts to whatever its default state is.
An example could be my experience with MediaPortal - it sits there
happily displaying it's main menu, and then thanks to the power of xPL
has to play a movie and so shows that instead. When it gets a stop
message, it goes back to the main manu again (or whatever screen it
happened to be on). The same would happen with a picture - play it
(i.e. display it) and then send a stop (or "play" another file)
when
you're done. It's all perfectly consistant that way.
