Your sounding a bit like me here :-)

I generally agree that it would be better to implement a protocol in an xPL
module for talking to devices.  However, I can see places, especially for
simple to control devices, where something that just sends a series of
bytes
to a serial or parallel port might be OK.  In a worst case situation, it
might allow someone to control something via xPL that they otherwise they
could not (perhaps not being in the position to be able to write a module).

I could also see it being useful for testing new hardware projects and such
during the development process (I know I would probably have been able to
use it
