I think I (more or less) got to the bottom of it in the end. The
problem wasn't with the mutex and transferrable hub as such, it was the
built-in hub in xPLHal that wasn't updated, and didn't work with new xPL
applications on some (all?) PCs when a ListenOn address etc was
specified. On my PC, the xPLHal hub refused to work with any of the my
new applications - I spent ages trying to figure out what was wrong with
my implementation before realising that none of the others worked either!
In the end the mutex had to be dropped to allow compatibility with the
Java apps, but the other changes (ListenOn, ListenTo etc) are extremely
useful and have been retained.
