I'd like to avoid that, since the flat structure is almost exactly like I'd
want from the second process you mention above anyway

And at the end of the day if anyone prefers a relational database (it can't
provide any more querying than the flat structure can), they can amend the
query.dll to work with their own database layout.

I think the flat structure as the default will provide a system that is
compatible with all database engines?
