Actually this isn't quite true.

There's no reason why source modules shouldn't be made up of two
components...

E.g.

A) xplmedianet dll

B) main source module (independent program/service)

If 'B' works in conjunction with 'A' via a network stream then a separate
pc
could run the hardcore stuff

E.g. a video transcoding source could run on a separate box?

Thoughts?
