RE: Newbie Question

Okay, first, I would like to apologize for calling it buggy software. It
was just frustrated that the installation went so smoothly, Cm12 was
detected, I was able to turn on and off the devices I added. However, it
just stopped working without any changes to my system in less than 5
minutes.

I can confirm that I don't have any active programs using COM1 (where CM12)
is connected. I can also confirm that I am able to access the CM12 and use
it using another application (that does NOT stay in memory).

I already uninstalled and removed both the hal and gateway. I also deleted
c:\program files\xPL\* and everything inside it. I even went into the
system32 dir and deleted the two XLS config files created by the program.

This following information might help:
When I install the Hal (after removing all that is mentioned above), I tell
it to load all plugins, then exit. When I go back into the Hal, I do NOT
see anything in "awaiting devices". The first time I installed
the app, it
had detected the device with no problems. NOTE: This is even BEFORE
installing the CM12 Gateway.

So, the problem happens before I even install the gateway I think. What
would prevent hal from seeing the device (in awaiting devices)?

I currently have XP Pro (SP2) with .NET framework 1.1 (including Hotfix
KB886903). All my drivers and software on this PC are certified as far as
I
can tell.

PS: I also tried installing CM11 gateway, after removing all mentioned
above.

I sincerely hope that I have given enough clues as to what is wrong.

Thanks for all your help guys,
Michael

Oh Good Grief.

Note: I'm not the author of the original software, I'm one of the xPL
Project team. (He's more tolerant than I am)

Please understand, Michael, that we owe you *NOTHING* Between the
various contributing programmers we have written this software in our
free time for no money, and it does what we want just fine.

I have been running John's CM12 gateway app for nearly 18 months without
so much as a sneeze, and have tested it extensively on many, many
different PCs.

The problems you describe are, I can assure you, 110% down to the
software installed on your own PC, and may indicate a problem with your
.NET Framework installation. Microsoft's technet support site is full of
mentions of similar errors for all sorts of services. I might even be
able to suggest a way to fix it, if you had provided us with any
information other than "help me, it's broke".

Understand that people on this list span the world, and have day jobs.
If you have some patience (and show some basic civility) you will get a
lot further than by coming on here and announcing that software that
many of us use without *any* problems is bugged, just because *you*
can't get it to work properly!

If you want some help, rather than for us to just ban you from the group
for being rude... I suggest you help us first.

What OS are you running?
What .NET Framework version?
Do you have up to date AV Software installed?

Now uninstall the CM12 service, then go delete the files you copied
manually - .NET based applications cannot simply be chopped around and
moved around like this - they are managed by windows to ensure the
correct files required to run are in place. In fact, delete the whole
c:\program files\xPL\xPL CM12 folder.

Once you have a clean system, we can see from there.

I.

This information is for the author or anyone else that can help:

I did absolutely nothing wrong after installing both the hal and the
cm12 gateway. Both services were running fine. Just a few minutes
later, I noticed the cm12 service was stopped. When I try to start it,
it starts for
1 second then it stops again. Even viewer doesn't have any error
messages.
Only that "XPL CM12 service was successfully sent a start control....
then, XPL C12 service entered the stopped state.

Again, I did absolutely nothing wrong and followed the instructions
correctly. I know for a fact that my CM12 interface works correctly on
my PC with no problems (I have tested it with other software). That is
why I think it is a bug.

I shouldn't have this much problems just trying to get it to work;
especially if I have followed the installation instructions correctly.
What surprises me is that not even reinstalling it solves the problem.
It worked for 5 minute,,, I could even turn on and off my lights. Now
the program is completely useless.

I hope the author will be able to help me soon, since I don't really
have the patience for buggy software.

I don't know the particular app as I use the vb6 version.

You'll need to wait for the author to see this message for specific help
I guess, though I doubt there's a bug as many people use it and I can't
recall anyone having a problem with it.

Have you checked the PC's application event log, it may well have an
error message in there.

Tony
