Hi Rob,

UDP broadcasts on 255.255.255.255 should not propogate to the internet,
unless you have a badly behaving connection (e.g. a router should always
block broadcasts)

If you had changed your broadcast ip to something like 192.168.1.255 then I
assume it didn't work because loopback is on 127.0.0.1 (so not in subnet)
and without a network connection your adapter would have picked up a non
192.168.1 address as no dhcp available (assuming you haven't got a
hardcoded
ip).

I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong here
