It turned out that it was my broadcast address that was causing the
problem.
Setting it back to 255.255.255.255 allows me to use either the LAN or
loopback interfaces (loopback works regardless of whether the LAN is
disconnected or disabled).
However, this has highlighted a big gap in my IP knowledge. I was under the
impression that I should restrict the broadcast address to stop
transmitting
xPL packets to the whole internet; now I'm not sure any more!
Can anyone shed some light on the "best" broadcast address to
use?
