Gary,

If you've a suitably high powered machine as your music server, then
xPLRioNet supports transcoding down to a lower bit-rate on the server at
playback time.

I've not done this myself so can't help on how you set this up :-(

In terms of coding tweaks, I understand that Tony's done a fair bit of
playing with buffer sizes, but all that does is delay the onset of the
skipping, not actually fix it :-(
