xAP to Squeezebox without Squeezecenter

I guess this is really aimed at Ed as he wrote the existing plugin for
Squeezecenter. I am interested if it is possible to send display message
commands straight to the Squeezebox without interfacing with Squeezecenter?
Here's my scenario. I have two machines my low power Mini-ITX server
consuming 27W and running xAP hub and Idratek HA software Cortex. This
machine runs 24x7 Then I have a Quad core video and audio server that
consumes 120W and runs Squeezecenter. This machine is setup to WOL and
hibernate when not in use.
What I am wondering is if basic messages can be sent to the Squeezebox
display for things like alerts, messages, warnings etc. without having to
use Squeezecenter?
