Hi Wayne,

Re the light levels - I guess it depends what you are replacing. If you're
=
used to the old fashioned 150W sun-bright incandescents, then a 60W
equival=
ent is going to look a little dim! ;) I actually find the Philips bulbs
ver=
y bright and certainly bright enough. As a lighting cameraman, I've always
=
very much liked having many levels and types of light in a room, building
u=
p a certain look which makes it very cosy and interesting - rather than a
s=
ingle glaring sun in the centre! Using colour washing Hue lamps has added
t=
o that artistry :)

LED lamps have certainly improved considerably over that last few years. I
=
agree that the early lamps were truly terrible with horrible colour casts
(=
green mainly) and that odd flicker that just catches your attention out of
=
the corner of your eye. I did compare the Philips Hue lamps to a 42W (60W
e=
quivalent) halogen bulb and the colour and brightness was pretty much the
s=
ame (just by eyeballing it). So I was very pleased with that. Certainly
bri=
ght enough for ceiling lamps 'big light!' :)

If you have a Philips Hue hub, that does need to be connected to your
netwo=
rk. Not necessarily the Internet but you'll loose updates (for what that's
=
worth!) and remote control outside of your network. The new Hue dimming
kit=
s don't need the hub - they link directly to the lamp out of the box but
yo=
u can then link them to the hub for wider control. Important to note that
t=
he Hue hub operates the lamps LOCALLY - it doesn't need to go via their
ser=
vers for local control which makes it nice and responsive. ST on the other
=
hand DOES operate via the cloud servers. With the new v2 hub, they have
bro=
ught some processing local to the hub to try and prevent the longer delays
=
and latency that a cloud based service inherently has. Linking the ST hub
t=
o the Hue hub works well as its a local connection so lamps respond
instant=
ly. Status of lamps on ST when not operated via ST can take a few moments
t=
o register though. So yes, ST HAS to be connected to the Internet to
operat=
e.

The RasPi runs the HomeBridge server. This basically enables non-HomeKit
de=
vices to be registered wth the HomeKit database so that Siri knows about
an=
d can control them. Siri is still pretty dumb though - I think it still
nee=
ds a fair bit of development to be really smart. My 'make it Christmas'
phr=
ase is actually a scene setup in the HomeKit database. You can add scenes
v=
ia one of the HomeKit apps like Eve. Once a scene is defined, you can then
=
speak that scene name and HomeKit will trigger those devices as defined.
It=
doesn't actually need the RasPi and HomeBridge to do this with native Home=
Kit enabled kit. If you just have Philips Hue Hub and lamps, you can
extend=
better functionality via Siri this way, just by using the Eve app :) Eve a=
lso enables you to group lamps by room, zones and service groups (e.g.
Desk=
lamps - made up of two lamps on a desk). Philips Hue doesn't natively supp=
ort rooms or zones etc, just scenes, so by using Eve, you can now say
somet=
hing like 'turn on office lights'.

Not sure about controlling HomeKit devices via other means, I've only used
=
it via Siri. HomeKit is basically just a database and is totally hopeless
s=
o far for any kind of automation, which is where ST and other automation
co=
ntrollers come in.

Paul.

Seems a reasonable thing that any =91bulb=92 replacement lights should

=
Its been a while since I have used any LED type replacements and it didn't
=
take too long for people to notice that it wasn't as bright as it started
o=
ut - to the point we just swapped them all back again.

I take it the Philips gear needs to see the internet to be able to
operate?=
I=92m guessing this from the ability to remotely control your lights etc (=
looking at their example videos).
Is this the same thing with the Samsung SmartThings also? Does it /have/
to=
be connected to their internet accounts or can it call be controlled inter=
nally via custom software etc?

Paul, your trigger command with the video was to =91make it christmas=92
do=
es the Pi server act as a sort of Siri Proxy that can use the power of
Siri=
to pick up on custom commands rather than the =92turn on office light=92 t=
hat you generally see in the Home Kit demos? I=92m guessing looking at the
=
HomeBridge site this is a plug in frame work of sorts that could be custom
=
triggered not just from Siri but other sources as well?

Thanks again all.
Wayne.

Glad it's given a bit of inspiration. The log fire video as Mark says, is

Sky on demand video. It's not great but OK. Was nice for Christmas morning=

! Very poor animation. I could have animated something (my day job) and

As Phil and others say, the hue lamps come on full brightness if manually
p=
ower cycled. What you really want is the new dimmer kit which has a remote
=
on/off/dimmer switch. This is really the missing part of the hue system
and=
can replace a light switch whilst still retaining HA control from other de=
vices (as the lamp is then permanently powered to react to on/off/dim
comma=
nds). What's even nicer with the Philips dimmer is if you assign it to a
fu=
ll scene, it can turn that whole scene on/off and also DIM that scene too.
=
Really nice :) the dimmer switch is actually a small remote that attaches
t=
o the wall plate via magnets so can be used as a remote or left on the
wall=
. The wall plate has screw fix holes or can be mounted via the attached
sti=
cky pads. Very neat solution, nicely made, looks good and I think great
val=
ue at =A330 for controller and a single hue white bulb. Amazon seem to be
o=
ut of stock again (hue stock levels seem to be very poor generally) but is
=
in stock from DmLights (Belgium IIRC). Used them a lot - good delivery and
=
stock levels and great pricing on some hue kit - although anything with
pow=
er plugs are EU type of course so need a 2 pin adapter.
