Dave,
I think the cloud requirement is only for the access via 3G, local wifi is
=
all "in house". I believe (although haven't tested) that any
schedules are =
stored on the actual plug itself and so are not reliant on any internet or
=
wifi access after they have been setup.
The Wemo's are just WiFi enabled devices so not mesh enabled like Z-Wave
un=
its. If you're WiFi is intermittent in that area then I'd guess you'd
just=
need a cheap wireless repeater something like this; http://www.amazon.co.u=
k/Huawei-WS320-Wi-Fi-Repeater/dp/B007SU0BJU
Having delved a bit deeper it seems that the WeMo uses standard
webservices=
and SOAP over HTTP to communicate so it should be easy enough to integrate=
into a wider home automation system ; http://www.objectpartners.com/2014/=

Thanks Marcus,
That's a lot of good information there.
I'll have to get them delivered to my parents' home in the UK first as
Amaz=
on don't ship the lights to Indonesia and then get them shipped out here.
I=
can get the hub and the switch units but no the lamps. Price was =A329 fro=
m Amazon for the lamps.
The cloud is OK for when I am not at home but I don't like control systems
=
that rely on it fully as you then need a guaranteed connection for it to
wo=
rk. My Spark Core modules are a point in fact with this issue.
I think I might bite the bullet and order some up.
One question though is in the range. I have some Homepro Z-Wave units and
t=
hey are hit and miss a lot of the time in my bedroom. I have a unit
between=
them as they are supposed to route the signal but this seems to not quite =
work. I'd be interested to know if this is how the Wemo units work or do
th=
ey need a signal from the hub. That will be a big issue for me living in
an=
apartment block with the Faraday cage that I seem to be in. For instance, =
WiFi in the bedroom is very weak.
Cheers
Dave...

Very funny Scotty, now beam down my clothes...

Subject: RE: [ukha_d] Belkin Wemo
Funnily enough I just bought one from Amazon on a lightening deal for
=A323=
. It arrived yesterday and I've had a quick play with it last night. I
have=
it connected to my coffee machine with a rule setup to turn it on 45mins b=
efore I'm due to get up so that its fully warmed up by the time I'm
downsta=
irs and ready to make my morning flat white. I used to do this with a
simpl=
e timer plug but the WeMo should allow me to manually turn the machine
on/o=
ff from the bedroom for those days when my schedule deviates from the
norm.=
It seems to work very well at the moment, and much quicker than the X10 m=
odule I was playing with plus it has status updates (unlike the AD10 plug)
=
so if the machine is activated manually the app shows it turned on.
Anothe=
r nice feature is that it auto configures itself to work over wifi when in
=
the house and 3G when away from the network. The downside is that it's
obvi=
ously using a Belkin server "in the cloud" to achieve this
routing and ther=
e is no option to configure it to be totally under your control i.e. use
y=
our own server/fixed IP/ dyndns etc. I'd also like to be able to control
it=
via a simple http get/put so that I could more easily integrate into a lar=
ger automation system. I did find some info on hacking it but haven't had
a=
time to investigate further yet; http://hackaday.com/2013/02/23/wemo-witho=
ut-a-smartphone/
Next step will be to link it up google calendar to stop the machine
turning=
on for days that I'm away from home (Holiday, business etc). I was looking=
at IFTTT but I've not had time to investigate too much yet. Another thoug=
ht is to use TASKER (Android) and have it simply work off my phones alarm
w=
hen I'm at home based on it's Geo location or connection to my home wifi.
At the rrp of =A350 I think they are probably too expensive but if you can
=
snag one for around =A323 their great.

st bought one from Amazon on a lightening deal for =A323. It arrived
yester=
day and I’ve had a quick play with it last
night. I have it connected to my coffee machine with a rule setup to turn =
it on 45mins before I’m due to get up so that its fully warmed up
by =
the time I’m downstairs and ready to make my morning flat white.
I us=
ed to do this with a simple timer plug but the
WeMo should allow me to manually turn the machine on/off from the bedroom =
for those days when my schedule deviates from the norm. It seems
to w=
ork very well at the moment, and much quicker than the X10 module I was
pla=
ying with plus it has status updates
(unlike the AD10 plug) so if the machine is activated manually the app sho=
ws it turned on. Another nice feature is that it auto configures
itse=
lf to work over wifi when in the house and 3G when away from the network.
T=
he downside is that it’s obviously using
a Belkin server “in the cloud” to achieve this routing
and the=
re is no option to configure it to be totally under your control
i.e.=
use your own server/fixed IP/ dyndns etc. I’d also like to be
able t=
o control it via a simple http get/put so that I could
more easily integrate into a larger automation system. I did find some inf=
o on hacking it but haven’t had a time to investigate further
yet;
