Thanks for all your comments.
I did have a go at adjusting the settings but could see no real
improvement. I'm not sure I was particularly systematic though and there
must be something amiss as when I switch to PC-via-HDMI the desktop -
although complete - has shrunk on the screen compared to the full-sized VGA
picture. I can make it bigger with one of the adjustments but I'm not
convinced this is fixing it "properly", as the image was no
clearer even
when it filled the frame.

I did plug in a PS3 through the same HDMI socket and that had a perfect
picture...
More investigation and fiddling needed I think, but thanks for the
pointers=
.

Marcus - did you initially have a poor picture and after adjustment was
great, or was it good right from the beginning?
