Home Network IP problem

Hi,
I am installing one of my Raspberry Pi Touchscreen heating controllers in a
friends home and there is something odd about the IP setup.
Occasionally connections from devices (like the iPad) to the Pi timeout,
and other times they work 100%.
He has 3 routers. The first is the main one, with ADSL connection, and
wireless enabled. Then there is a second, DHCP disabled, wired to the first
one, with wireless enabled again (all settings the same as the first).
The third is in an outhouse, and is wired to the second (so the 3 are in a
chain) and also has wireless enabled.
Any pointers as to how to look at traffic on the network, or diagnose the
intermittent problems? I'd appreciate suggestions as to commands or tools
(linux or windows)
