Having feedback about the status of the switch is important to me
(especially with kids leaving things switched on).

My approach is to use relatively inexpensive 'one way' RF lightswitches in
conjunction with a standalone HAHnode unit in every room. The node is
battery powered, and talks to my HA controller via bi-directional RF. It
sends light level/temperature/motion detection signals. The nodes are small
and since they need no wiring can be placed most anywhere in a room.
