I would be tempted to approach it from another point of view - do you
need it to look pretty or will it be hidden away ?
If it's on view then by all means go for a Middle Atlantic type rack and
spend the money - if it's going to be hidden away then I'd go for the
largest and cheapest rack I could get.

It's one of the 'if I did it all over again' points I'd make - I built my
Node 0 in the corner of my study as the geek side of me wanted to show off
all the dazzling kit with the pretty lights :-) Having lived with it and
the associated issues (Cooling/noise/lack of expansion/shortage of U space)
I wish I'd created it in the attached garage. Too many cables to move now
though :-0

If you're planning on installing commercial servers (HP DL380's etc) then
you'll need a deep rack, most of the smaller AV or networking cabs are too
short to accept the rack rails and you'll end up buying custom cases and
building your own. I did this and got my rackmount cases from Evercase (http://www.evercase.co.uk/) they seem
to have done something horrible to their website but the cases are good
quality and quite reasonable. They also come with optional adjustable rack
rails to suit different depth racks. I went for 1 X EYE4800 and 2 X
EYE2831.

come into it! Even if you pick up a margin rack on eBay, reason being is
that although the International Standards Equipment Practice (ISEP)
19" racking might lead you to believe that racking kit from various
manufacturers might be comparable, other than U heights and boating
equipment or shelves to the vertical rails, precious little else is
compatible from one rack manufacturer to another. So when it comes to
obtaining accessories for your rack like chassis rails etc. You'll be
entering a minefield unless you know the rack manufacturer and can obtain
their spoke parts.

outset and go with Middle Atlantic products, they have a vast range of
racks and accessories from plain shelves, through a wide variety of cable
management to pull out and swivel rack cabinets. They are not cheap by any
imagination, however, you will end up with a professional looking
installation, rather than a load of dexian that came from a scrap yard.
They also manufacture custom shelves, which give a very clean and sleek
look to the front of the rack.
