RE: Has anyone used...

Be careful of using the DS1307 as it is known for drift if your PCB
design
or crystal choice is not good. I have one in my board and I have put a
ground plane around the crystal but I still get drift of around 2-3 mins
per
week. Not good.

I use the DS1338 instead. Is almost software compatible with the DS1307 so
you won't need much code changes. With the same attention to PCB layout
this
holds time very well.

I am however considering a change to the Epson RTC's with the built in
crystal to avoid any issues. They have a device that is stated to be very
accurate. Saying that, if you have a GPS input, or Ethernet you can sync it
to a time server.

Nope, although many folks use the cheap DS3107 RTC to provide that
functionality.

A GPS receiver shield can also provide time, and since I'm a Jeenode
user I'd be inclined to use this http://jeelabs.com/products/rtc-plug
:-)
