Result!

For the crashing, you could try to run mythfrontend from a terminal
session on the desktop, so that the process doesn't run in the
background. I don't have a mythbox to hand, but there maybe a -v
option to give more info when it runs. When it crashes, it should give
some sort of error on the terminal. This maybe be just "core
dumped",
which isn't overly useful.
