Perhaps I was being too negative. I have moved several dozen Windows
installs between different hardware, and have never had a total
failure, but each case has had its different speed humps.
Just to be certain, I always have good backups (usually complete disc
images) or more often, I move the old install to a fresh HD before
moving that to new hardware.
There are also certain things you can do old the old hardware to make
things easier. A chkdsk is well worth doing, and I believe that MS also
recommend removing all mobo drivers in advance, but I have never done
this.
Microsoft seem to make this process hard as they want the old Windows
licence to die with the old box and for you to buy a new one (with
fresh install) on the new box.
