RE: Re: long HDMI 1.4 cable problems

Mmm, that is encouraging I'll definitely look out for these units :)

Thanks Neil.

Paul.

I've had 100% success with the Octava HD-Base-T extenders, on cable lengths
of upto 80m and with the cables terminated through RJ45 patch panels and
wall modules. It's the first time I've been able to carry out installs over
distance and have the confidence that it will simply just work. Just
yesterday I popped a unit in for a customer who fitted a new TV in a room
without any coax (but with cat5e), testing the cable showed it was 75m from
patch panel to wall module and I simply plugged up the Octava extender
(including running Ethernet through the extender for the Smart TV
functions, and IR return to control his SkyHD box as well). In no time at
all it was all up and running without any hassles or head scratching - not
more to ask for from the hardware J

I've also used it successfully for feeding Full HD video and audio from a
remote BluRay player (30m from source to AVR) to an AVR, with another
extender then running HD video from AVR to screen (60m from AVR to screen)
and again it simply just works.

HD-Base-T switches are available now, prices are variable and can be
eye-watering for larger matrix models. If you don't need to fit right now
then it might be worth holding out for a few months as the next phase
should include power over Cat5e for the receivers meaning no more faffing
trying to hide wall-wart transformers (or attempting to steal 5v from TV
USB sockets) behind the TV. I'm not sure if a 4x2 HD-Base-T is planned,
certainly there will be 4x4, but Joe will have the details if you need
them.

Neil - really interested to see how you got on with the HD Base T stuff - I
spoke to Joe a few weeks ago as was interested in the Octava matrix kit. He
mentioned that there would be some new HD Base T switches out over the
coming 6 months or so. Have you heard anything?

Ideally I want a 4x2 or 4x2 matrix with HD Base T over my existing Cat5e
installed (via patch panel and wall plates unfortunately).

Cheers,

Paul.

You should be looking for a high-speed HDMI cable, the numbering scheme
(1.4
etc) relates to features of the HDMI chipset and has nothing to do with
cables. This is rated to achieve 10.2Gb/s which covers 3D, full HD audio
and 4k2k resolution for future proofing.

If you are looking for reliability then I would suggest going for a branded
cable providing costs are not too horrific, or look for a HDMI booster to
clean up the signal at the display. Cheap unbranded cables are unlikely to
have any testing so their performance is likely to be hit and miss. If you
want to talk to a company who supply good quality HDMI equipment and who
can give excellent support then speak to Joe or John at The Media Factory -
I use their Octava HD-Base-T extenders in all of my installs now as they
are 100% reliable and work over distances of upto 100m, and all over a
single good quality Cat5e cable. For "proper" HDMI cables I now
either use Wireworld high-speed flat cables or Sanus highly flexible
high-speed cables.
However I would only go upto 5m with such a cable, after that I prefer to
use baluns with Cat5e.

I've used 15m eBay "cheapies" at 1080p without issues ... but not
at 3D.
