Install Mike Linn's startup monitor and haul out all the shite that runs
with no good reason. Also turn off services you don't need - lots of
guides on the web.

I have machines here that are on their original XP installs and this has
been moved from HD to HD, and machine to machine, for several years and
they are still running well.

I use drivesnapshot for imaging, but this is for HD failure or serious
virus strike.

How much memory do you have fitted? 1GB is the minimum for XP nowadays
even though 256MB was enough when it was released.
