RE: iPad Home Automation App Videos
Yes, it's a great app. The problem is (unless I'm missing the
obvious) you can't store the files locally on the iPad, so when I'm at the
gym (he says, as if he's at the gym all the time!) I can't get to the files
(no wi-fi). So I use Handbrake to reformat the files, and then download
them to the iPad for offline viewing. Right now I'm having horrible issues
with iTunes, lots of file permission errors and ambiguous 'Error -50' and
'Error -39' errors when I try to sync Podcasts. iTunes is purely used as
the mechanism to maintain content in the various portable devices, so I
really need to take a look at what (simple) alternatives there are.
Over here Sprint offer a 4G battery-powered wi-fi hotspot that will give me
fairly high-speed (4mps-ish) connectivity, so I'm thinking that might be a
good solution, I'm going to try to get a trial unit from Sprint (since
they're our corporate mobile provider).
Plan B would be to switch out the iPad for a 3G version, but I like my
battery life on the wi-fi version, and I'm sure that'll take a hit, plus
it's still 'only' 3G, as opposed to the 4G I can get with Sprint for the
same price (there's 2 iPads in this family, and the Sprint deal for
unlimited 4G is $60 per month (or free, if I can get the company to pay!)).
Other great apps I've found so far...ABC's TV Player (free, but you'd need
a US VPN connection for that), Kindle, BBC News, TeamViewer (not yet iPad
optimized, but a great FREE remote desktop app), Slingplayer, Web Albums
(if you use Picasa to store photo's online). Hoping that the BBC will
release an iPlayer soon that will allow content to be stored locally.
I've just ordered a Gelaskin to keep the flag flying over here :): https://www.gelaskins.com/skins.php?SkinID=421&DeviceID=94&CategoryID=60

Have you played with air video. It allows you to stream any video stored on
your network to the iPad or iPod. It has just taken the iPad to a whole new
level, I can access all of the files on my fileserver without having to
convert into apple friendly format

what it does. The only downside, having just spent the week on holiday, is
that it sucks in bright sunlight, had to revert to the Kindle for day time
reading. Battery life is surprisingly good, easily exceeding the 10 hrs
that were quoted. I also discovered Handbreak (probably old news to most
you guys) which can convert any of my burnt DVDs to an Apple-friendly
format.
