Optical sensors - water softener

Has anyone modified a water softener to give an indication to an HA
system when it's running low on salt?
My system work on block salt, so I thought a stainless or plastic optical
sensor beaming across the salt talk would work best.
Anyone done this and got recommendations for a suitable sensor?
