I used sms server tools to turn my NEO 1973 into an SMS gateway. If
your friend has unlimited* funds for the sms side he might want to
look at SMS Fox Box ( http://www.smsfoxbox.com/ http://tinyurl.com/cbxsym
) since it is a linux box it may be possible to add a serial (usb)
to X10 interface relatively simply.

You might also want to look at the Domia lite controller ( http://tinyurl.com/cc8t3a
) which uses a very basic http protocol to control it. ie you could
probably just use wget to control a domia lite appliance module.

linux box + Domia lite controller + mobile phone + cable + sms server
tools ( http://smstools3.kekekasvi.com/
 http://tinyurl.com/7cdt74 )

The other alternative is to find a company that will do you a virtual
sms number and deliver via email then have a script run when email
comes in to send data to the domia lite controller.

*fair use policy applies.
