Another option would be something like Polycom's video conferencing
software, I'm looking into this for work at the moment, they give a
completely free trial of the software, it's just limited to 5 minute
conversations which for an intercom would be plenty.
Also gives you benefit (??!!) of video too if you want it.
Just an option, as it does pure point to point direct to the ip address of
the other machine.
