I agree Phil,

=20

>From an installers point of view (ie having to sell equipment that
there=92=
s a
chance is going to work reliably) it sits right at the budget end of the
market =96 and has far more by way of features and facilities than
many/mos=
t
of the more premium priced products.

=20

Pretty much everything in our little world has gone up over the last 6
months or so for the reasons you point out. We don=92t make anything in
thi=
s
country anymore therefore everything is bought in Dollars, Euros, Yen, or
whatever, all of which have become much more expensive. In fact Sonos have
been the last of our major suppliers to implement a price rise.

=20

In 20 years it=92s the first time I can remember prices going UP, and I
understand that it seems odd when the economic climate is as it is. But
what=92s the alternative? There=92s no point in suppliers selling stuff at
=
an
unsustainably low level and then not being about in 12 months time, that
doesn=92t work in anyone=92s favour. If they were just profiteering
because=
of
the popularity of the product I would agree with Paul=92s point, however I
don=92t think any of our suppliers have enjoyed putting prices up, it=92s
s=
imply
that they can=92t afford not to. And as I said above Sonos are among the
la=
st
to do so.

=20

What will be interesting is, if the pound ever recovers, to see if
supplier=
s
reduce prices accordingly. If they don=92t then I think you would have a
po=
int
(but I=92m not sure we=92re likely to find out for a while).

Absolutely Paul - The company I work for has had to do exactly the same
onl=
y
a few months ago, component costs tend to be tied to the dollar rate and so
when you're sourcing anything from outside the UK then changes in exchange
rate bite very hard.

Remember that the price you pay for something isn't the price that the
manufacturers sell it for - there's dealer and distributor margins as well
as shipping costs which again have taken a hefty upwards jump (levied as
additional fuel surcharges by the major carriers onto business accounts) in
there as well. :-(

Not exactly sure I agree with your "it's already a premium priced
product"
though - it's pretty much bargain basement really! What is there that does
=
a
similar job, and that is still available as a commercial product for the
en=
d
user to buy and install without "hacking about", that is cheaper?
Squeezebo=
x
Boom? There's not a lot cheaper than it is really but there's a hell of a
lot more expensive. ;-)
