That's outrageous!!

I would expect Apple to realise that you are registering a "new"
item
and offer to upgrade to the latest firmware.

After that, I accept that a small charge may be reasonable for "step
changes" in firmware (from 2 to 3 or whatever) but not for a new
product.

I cut my teeth on Apple //'s and //e's but I'd never purchase a bean (or
even a pip :-/) from Apple now due to their draconian DRM.

As for your later post about iPlayer and WMP beating each other up, I
await your future post about how iPlayer has deleted all your media
files and replaced them with a pod cast from Steve Jobs!!!!

Make sure you have your multi terrabytes of media backed up somewhere
coz you know it's gonna happen! . . . . .
