RE: Using 1 wire temp sensors on copper pipes?



Do any of you HA systems have inputs that can measure resistance? If
so then
you can buy thermistor-based clamp-on sensors from Sontay and use the
published look-up tables to convert from resistance to degrees C. The
sensors have an enclosure with screw terminals for the cable connection, 1m
of cable terminated with a brass strip (to which the thermistor is bonded)
that is clamped to the pipe with a jubilee clip. If you then put pipe
insulation over the top of the sensor you will get reasonable accuracy.
These are the kind of sensors used in industrial/commercial BMS
installations so are quite robust.

With the talk of temp sensors, I was wondering if anyone has used 1 wire
temp sensors on copper DHW pipes? I need to measure (reasonably accurately
to +-1 deg or so) the temperatures of my boiler feed and return and other
feed/returns on my thermal store system - mainly for tuning purposes.

I was wondering if these are the right devices to use (max temp??) and the
best way to bond them or temporarily fix them to the pipes? Was thinking
maybe using epoxy resin such as araldite etc.

Any thoughts?
