RE: Converting JukeBox to SATA
The 4-in-3 ones I use are from StarTech but are branded up by other
companies too - they were fairly expensive and sounded like a vacuum
cleane=
r
when powered up. They had the oddest sized fans in them - 80 x 80 x 20mm so
finding quieter replacements was a pain as well but I found some that were
used on an Akasa CPU cooler, bought three of the coolers for =A31.50 each
f=
rom
www.savastore.com (what used to be Watford Electronics), used the cables
an=
d
plugs off the noisy fans to modify the quiet ones to fit electrically,
reversed the airflow through the backplanes so that instead of air being
sucked through into the case it is blown through out of the case and
whacke=
d
it all into a Coolermaster CM Stacker enclosure. The result was a boot
driv=
e
plus 12 SATA bays server that although not silent is quiet enough that it
actually lives in my bedroom (yes, the "student" lifestyle again
as I share
a house at the moment) and doesn't keep me awake at night. It also cools
fantastically well - the WD "Greenpower" 1Tb drives that are in
there (10 o=
f
them) all run at between 29 and 32 degrees according to the SMART data that
they return and the two Samsung F1 1Tb drives that are in there run at
25-2=
6
degrees.
The 5-in-3 ones that I have were from XCase.co.uk and were an SS-500 which
were as cheap as chips - something like =A340 each including the VAT! They
=
no
longer do them (which is a shame as I need another one) and when I asked
them about them they said that they weren't thinking of bringing any more
i=
n
as due to the current exchange rate it was uneconomic to do so as they
woul=
d
have to put them up to about =A370 (which still seems a bargain!).
I believe that this is the manufacturers site...
http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=3D8&modelno=3Dss-500
...and I have seen them appear on eBay and seen them for sale from US
websites.
They don't look as fancy as some of the other SATA backplanes but they're
decently built and have a good quality fan on the back (I do like the
"MagLev" fans - never had problems with them and that's what's on
these).
They're not as quiet as the modified StarTech backplanes and they don't
coo=
l
*QUITE* as well but they still don't give me any problems. The WD
Greenpowers in those report that they're running at between 31-34 degrees
and the single Hitachi 1Tb drive that I have (which is a hot running bugger
anyway) runs at around 40.
I'll dig out the details of the cheap SATA cards that I'm using and how I
flashed them to make them non-RAID and where I got all the bits of software
from to do it with - I know Mark asked about that the other day.=20
