There's quite a few tutorials floating about.

This one:

is pretty helpful and spells it all out. You do have to be a bit
careful when locking and unlocking the drive, but so long as you take
your time over it you'll be fine. It shouldn't be a major problem so
long as you preserve the old drive, and keep a copy of the eeprom.bin
file which is created when you do the softmod.

I was really impressed with it, when I did it. The bootable xbox linux
distributions are really useful. I used one to copy the hacked
savegames over in the first place, using a homebrew USB adapter.
