I've done that without problems. I just make sure that I have a Windows
CD with a matching type (Home, Pro, Retail, OEM, etc.), the CD key, and
an image of the disk (though am normally fitting a new one so copying
across and image of the old HD and resizing the filing system) and I go
straight for the Windows repair option. It's then just a case of
slapping on any mobo drivers that are required, and letting Windows
spend an age doing all the updates since the SP that's on the CD.

I have recently done a "from scratch" install of Windows and a
re-
install of all applications. This took much longer.

Of course, Linux is better at having hardware changed under it (mostly
just works) and is also much faster to setup from scratch as most
distros come with 95% of what you need on there and ready to go.
