MS Server 'Cals' ?

Hi,

I think I need to scrap WHS and upgrade to MS Server 2008.

Problem is I'm not sure what MS Server CALs are. The quantity of these
purchased seems to dictate price.

What exactly will a CAL allow me to do ?

I searched a Wiki, but it doesn't clarify the connection options.

Is it used in the context of number of active connections to control
the Server ?

Can I still have any number of client devices using a File Share on MS
Server, irrespective of the number of CALs ?

A true definition would be appreciated.

Thanks
