What I find more concerning is that they are persisting with a PCI
slot.

PCIe would at least let you put some grunty graphics in there with mpeg4
decoding on it so you could use it as a HTPC. Not going to see that onboard
intel go very far in that area.

Fantastic price and I can see many uses for it but as you say - VGA
output? Why?

Mind you - you can say the same thing for PS/2 mouse and keyboard
connectors, parallel ports (when did you last see a printer for sale in a
shop or online that used a parallel port?) and - heresey as it may seem
here - serial ports too ... have used nothing but USB to serial adapters
(keyspan ones usually because they're uterly reliable) for ages now!

Does look a bloody nice board though - looking forward to seeing some
reviews!
