Yep alfresco does that... you can also access it via windows type
share too
\\server_\ <file:///\\server_\> ...



It will also index the files, pdfs, word docs etc so you can search on the
contents....

Actually thinking about it, as I need to upload a lot of files perhaps
it would be best uploading via FTP to a web server. But then have a
front end that can be accessed via a graphical web interface that is
automatically generated from the files on the webserver?

Is there such a thing? It simplifies my administration.
