I tried MCE - total bag of spanners. So need an alternative dedicated=20
system (dont even think of mentioning Mac XBMC McCall)

I doubt it.  Unless it's open source?  I've bought proprietary media
players in the past and they've been atrocious.  Plenty of issues on their
forums by the looks of it - ISO playback broken in current firmware for
example and basic features like resume are miissing.
