Recommendation for outdoor sensors

I am looking to get some reliable sensors for use outdoors with X10.
I am looking for both PIR options and a robust sensor to add to the
front gate.

I have been using the old outdoor X10 PIR units but they have now
failed - should I look to use standard PIR units and an X10
PowerFlash module? How would I connect this up? Is there a more
robust solution? These would live on the garage which is at the
bottom of the garden. I'm already using an X10 powerflash unit with
electric garage doors to switch on lights when the door opens - works
well.

I have been using an 10 Powerflash unit with reed switches on the
front door and outside gate. Both work fine for a few weeks then
start to fail sending constant X10 on/off signals. I'm presuming that
the reed switch is somehow failing, although turning the powerflash
unit off and on cures it for a few minutes. Is there a better way to
sense doors, especially outdoors in the winter?

Appreciated.

Andy.
