Sharing an external USB drive

Hi all,
I'm thinking of using one of those USB splitter devices for linking
an external USB drive to two XP machines.
Is this a bad idea?
Both machines will be controlled by me so it's unlikely I'll be
transferring files on both machines simultaneously, although I
wasn't sure what would happened if both of the operating systems
tried accessing the device at the same time.
Alternatively I can just have it connected to one at a time, but was
after a little convenience :0)
