Paul,
You are right it doesn't need a HDD it'll work fine without as a
streaming target. If you add a HDD you can install things like bit-
torrent, FTP, NFS, Samba, etc.
I'm currently playing with GB-PVR which is a media server and one of
the guys has written a client for the PCH. The beauty is you can watch
TV on the PCH which is streamed from the GB-PVR server
